When mesh is clearly right
Warm offices, south facing windows, server-adjacent rooms and anywhere air conditioning is optimistic rather than effective. Also anyone who runs hot, which is more people than raise it.
It also keeps sight lines open. A floor of mesh backs looks less solid than the same floor in upholstery, which matters in open plan.
What to check before buying
Mesh quality varies far more than the photographs suggest. Cheap mesh loses tension within a year, and a sagging mesh back stops supporting the lumbar region entirely, which defeats the whole purpose. Everything here is specified for contract use.
Check the arms too. Mesh chairs are often sold armless as the headline price, and arms at the wrong height are worse than none at all.
When to choose something else
Cold offices, where the airflow works against you. And anyone who simply prefers a padded back, which is a legitimate preference rather than a mistake. Fabric task chairs cover that case.
