A heavier, more finished desk
Desks with a solid panel at each end rather than a metal leg. The panel does three jobs at once: it carries the load, it screens the sides, and it makes the desk look like furniture rather than office equipment.
The modesty argument
A panel end blocks the view under the desk from the side. In an open office where desks are seen by visitors, or where people sit facing a walkway, that is the difference between a tidy room and a room full of legs, bags and cables.
It is the reason panel ends remain standard in reception-adjacent areas and client facing offices.
The look
Panel ends read as heavier and more permanent. In a traditional office that is exactly right. In a small or modern space it can feel bulky, and cantilever legs keep the floor visually lighter.
What to check
Floor cleaning. A panel meeting the floor is harder to clean under than an open frame, which is a genuine consideration in a food-adjacent or high traffic area.
And cable routing: the panel hides cables from the side but does not route them. If you want power carried inside the frame, specify cable managed legs instead.
